French artist and interior decorator, Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942) was well-known for his contributions to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Verneuil was also an illustrator, producing many posters alongside other artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec.
In his 1897 portfolio L’Animal dans la décoration, Verneuil created a variety of designs based on plant and animal forms. Skillfully reimagining creatures into decorative motifs, he provided many patterns and elements for free use by interior designers to create home furnishings. The pattern decorating our delightful vase/luminary is based on Verneuil’s design of cockatoos fluttering in a citrus grove filled with plump lemons ready to pick.
